Smith Covered Bridge, New Castle County, Delaware

Smith's Bridge is a Burr truss covered bridge built in 1839 over the Brandywine River in New Castle County, Delaware. The original white pine structure was destroyed by arson in 1961 and subsequently recreated in August 2002 using fire-resistant Bongossi hardwood, earning a historic preservation award in 2003. The reconstruction incorporates modern structural elements, including steel I-beams for support, and differs from the original design in that the Burr arches do not extend fully into the abutments.
